PHASES: SINGLE PHASE AND THREE PHASE SINGLE PHASE 110 volts, 115v, 120v and 208v, 220v, 240 volts Common voltages are 110v, 115v, 120v typical in homes or offices; used interchangeably when labeled 110, 115 or 120 volt. Single phase electricity uses a live, neutral and earth (or ground) wire...Also in 208v, 220v or 240v single phase. Note: 208v equipment generally does not work with 220 or 240v. THREE PHASE 208 volts, 220v, 240v, 277v and 480 volts Common voltages are 208v, 220v, 240v, 277v and 280 volts (all three phase) used in institutions. Always suggest 480 volts when the facility has the electrical capability to provide it - it is in the operators long term best interest. Three phase electricity involves the use of three live wires plus an earth (or ground) wire. Note: 208v equipment generally does not work with 220 or 240v. A piece of equipment that requires 70 amps can be connected to a 100 amp circuit; but a piece of equipment requiring 100 amps should not be connected to an 80 amp circuit ‘Initial Draw’ refers to the amount of amps required to start a motor. When matching a piece of equipment to a circuit, the circuit should always be equipped with a breaker large enough and a circuit capacity that can handle the initial draw.
